How Humor and Fun Can Boost Your Dating Appeal Every Time

Funny and fun win the attraction game nearly every time.
So many people walk into dating worried they’re not pretty enough, not masculine enough, rich enough, or physically fit enough. They feel like love is a scoreboard, and they’re already behind. While some of the physical attributes may be important, it’s only important until you open your mouth. In the past seven years, I have been coaching people to find love, and I want you to know that there is no magic bullet. Yet, Fun and funny are as close to magic as you can get. I have seen the average person find real love when they are funny and fun to be around.
I know you think you’re already fun and kind of funny (and you probably are), but we still need to polish it up a little. Not just any kind of funny works when initially meeting someone. We need to highlight the right kind of funny and drastically reduce the wrong kind. Keeping people on their toes holds their attention, a keystone in dating. How you hold attention is paramount to keeping the spark burning.
Let’s get the wrong funny out of the picture. Ready? Degrading sarcasm is the wrong kind of funny. If you are going to dig your heels in on that, this is just part of who you are; I beg you to take a look at why you are dug in here and then lean into a healthier mindset. If you are smart enough to be sarcastic, you can learn to bring other kinds of humor to relationships with little effort. Sarcasm is the kind of “funny” that’s really just an insult. Even if you are truly just joking, it can make someone feel bad or degrade them in the process. Sometimes it gets a laugh, for sure, but only in small doses, and only when it’s held back to key relationships. Lean on it too hard and too early, and it stops being amusing and starts being mean. People may laugh, but they also feel bad, and that unclear energy tags you as confusing, and that’s not fun or attractive beyond the initial laugh.
Your natural wit, when playful, more balanced, and optimistic, is the desired context for being funny when dating. It’s wordplay and shows your brain can be used for fun. Frequently, it’s noticing two things that don’t normally belong together and putting them side by side anyway. It’s quick, it’s clever, and it doesn’t cost anyone their dignity to enjoy it. Wit makes people feel included in the moment.
So, if you want to be a funny, fun person people can’t help but like, here are some ways to polish your funny bone:
Play with words. Puns, double meanings, and surprising turns of phrase are the easiest kind of clever there is. (Out for Tex-Mex with friends: “Round of margaritas! Let’s salt the wounds of this day and call it a party.")
Mash up two things that don’t belong together. The unexpected combo is almost always funnier than the obvious joke. (Describing your cooking as “a fusion of my mom’s five-star recipes and my complete inability to follow instructions.")
Make fun of yourself, lightly. Poking fun at your own quirks shows confidence and invites people to laugh with you, not at anyone. Do not overplay this when dating. It’s funny to laugh at an oops on the date or in your story, but don’t degrade yourself; that’s worse than sarcasm. ("I was so lost trying to find this restaurant using my GPS that the app rerouted itself out of pure confusion … twice! and I still listened to it.")
Commit to the bit. A small, silly idea taken seriously for just a few extra seconds is often funnier than a big punchline. (Again, balance it out. Take it a few seconds longer, but don’t keep it the entire date. If you’re going to talk like a pirate, go all in for a moment; all night is too much.)
Notice the absurdity in everyday moments. Pointing out something silly that’s happening right in front of you feels natural, not forced. (A waiter sprints past with six plates stacked on one arm: “I feel like we should be cheering for him. This is basically an Olympic event.")
Use a well-timed callback. Bringing up something funny from earlier in the conversation shows you were paying attention, which is its own kind of charm. (Twenty minutes after they mention hating cilantro: “Wait, is this hidden cilantro? Are we in danger?”)
Be playfully dramatic. Celebrating the smallest win or turning a tiny inconvenience into a mock tragedy, on purpose, almost always gets a laugh. (Getting the last parking spot: “I’d like to thank my parents, my third-grade teacher, and whoever pulled out thirty seconds before we got here.")
None of these require good looks, money, or muscle. They require attention to detail, timing, and some confidence. That’s why funny wins. Again, this is natural. Please refrain from memorizing and telling joke after joke. Using your wit in a natural conversation to get to know someone is the entire lesson. It’s available to anyone willing to practice it. You don’t have to lean into all examples; just a few will do. And you practice it with everyone you know and meet until you are confident. It will feel awkward at first, but before long, it will become second nature when you find what works for you.
So, if you’re worried you don’t measure up on paper, stop measuring. Work on having fun and being quick with a smile instead. This is the kind of attraction you can build on over time, one that will transcend your love life.
You still need to maintain your integrity, kindness, and confidence, as well as your boundaries, standards, and values, but the first step is attraction. They won’t know your integrity or interests if you don’t attract them in the first place. So in a nutshell, funny always wins.
**A note to the people who don’t feel fun and funny. Let me ask what’s happening in your life? It’s difficult to feel fun and funny when you are in a physical or mentally anguished state. Are you in a loop where you believe that if you find the right person, you will be fun and funny again? This is so hard because it often doesn’t work that way. You must be happy to find happy. You have to be a good partner to find a good partner. Sometimes we are just a little off in defining ourselves. Do you need help with this? A professional therapist, counselor or coach can help you find your funny bone again. I have faith you still have your funny bone. It simply needs a little polish.
